Meeting held on 19th December 2007

The President, Mrs Janet Gadsby, welcomed members and guests to the Christmas Party. Everyone was given a glass of mulled wine to drink during the business part of the evening.
The new programme for 2008 was given out: it looks like another busy year for Loscoe WI.
Arrangements were made for the outing to Youlgreave for the Pantomime at the end of January. This will include a meal after the performance.
A letter of thanks had been received from the staff at Cedar Avenue respite care home, for all the toiletries that the members had donated. The staff had requested these, for the residents, as often when they arrive at Cedar Avenue they have no basic essential toiletries with them.

Trevor Lee
The entertainment for the evening was Trevor Lee and the Christmas Music Hall. We were treated to a host of old time songs with a Christmas theme including Christmas Alphabet and All I want for Christmas, along with a few carols illustrated with scrolls of decorated parchment. We all joined in with the singing and enjoyed a marvellous evening.

Hamper
Trevor then drew the raffle for the hamper, which was won by Mrs. Janet Padgham, 2nd prize was won by Nicky and 3rd prize went to Graham. Everyone was then invited to help themselves to the buffet, which had been provided by the members.

Members enjoy the party
Mrs Norma Turner won the competition.
The next meeting at the Evergreen Centre, Loscoe will be on Wednesday 17th January and The String House Orchestra will provide the entertainment.
The competition is “A Winter Photograph”.

Meeting held on 21st November 2007

The President, Mrs Janet Gadsby, welcomed members to the November Harvest Supper and AGM.
The Tombola on Heanor market raised over £100 and everyone was thanked for their support. Items from the Derbyshire Link were discussed.
Members were reminded about the Carol Service, which is to be held at All Saints Church, Marlpool, and not Marlpool URC as previously mentioned. Sorry for any confusion.
Janet Padgham gave a report on the Autumn Council meeting, the highlight of which was Pam Ayres reciting some of her poetry.
A delegate is needed for the Spring Council meeting in Chesterfield and Mrs Joan Turner offered to go.
The next meeting will be the Christmas party and members were asked to bring food for the buffet. There will also be a raffle for a Christmas Hamper. Members are welcome to bring a friend to the party. It was agreed once again that rather than swap Christmas cards at the party, a donation of £1 from each member would be collected for charity.
Mrs Dianne Smith gave the secretary’s report and Mrs Margaret Allen gave the treasurer’s report. Then Mrs Janet Gadsby gave a short report on the year’s events, which included a trip to Tissington Hall, Sunday Lunch on the River Trent and a visit to the Playhouse to see a show. She thanked members for all their hard work and support. The committee then stood down and a new committee was voted in.
There followed a supper of soup with bread and apple crumble and cream.
The competition for “your favourite recipe” was won by Mrs Janet Padgham and the raffle by Mrs Joan Smith.
The next meeting at the Evergreen Centre, Loscoe will be on Wednesday 19th December at 7.15pm and will be the Christmas Party.

Meeting held on 17th October 2007

The President, Mrs Janet Gadsby, welcomed everyone to the October meeting.
Members were reminded about the Charity Stall on Heanor Market on Friday 26th Oct.
The West Leys Carol Service will be on Tuesday December 4th at Marlpool United Reform Church.
Loscoe are hosting the West Leys Group Meeting next April and preparations are well under way.

Janet then had to announce that our speaker for the evening from “Lush” shops had let us down and would not be coming.
Fortunately, Anne Willis had been able to get Dave Mason and his mountain rescue dog, Megan, to stand in at the last minute. Both were a great hit with everyone.
Dave told us how Megan was trained, and then showed slides of dogs being trained on the moors and mountains.
The dogs start as puppies playing hide and seek games with their owner and a volunteer who has to hide. The games get harder as the volunteer hides deeper into the moors, often staying hidden for several hours until the dog finds them. Dave and Megan

Megan is trained to bark when she finds a person or item of clothing and then runs back to Dave to indicate she has found something. She then runs between what she has found and Dave until he reaches the object of her excitement.
To her it is just a game that she loves, but to someone lost in the Peak District she can be the difference between life and death.
The rescue dogs are extremely good at nighttime as they use their sense of smell to locate missing people. They also work well in the snow and have training in avalanche situations. Mountain Rescue dogs are taken all over the country and sometimes have to be transported by helicopter to get to remote places. It takes over 2 ½ years to train a rescue dog and the dog and handler have to spend a weekend being tested on the ability of the dog to find people over all sorts of terrain. If the dog passes they are awarded a special badge to wear on their coat that shows they are one of an elite group of dogs in the country. There are about 90 fully trained dogs with handlers in the UK. They are on call 24 hours a day 365 days a year. Once Dave had finished his talk, Megan was brought into the hall to meet everyone.
Dave warned us that she would be very excited because she would think that she had found us and would be very pleased with herself. Megan came and visited everyone in the hall and loved all the attention.

Margaret Allen gave the vote of thanks, and said how much we had enjoyed the talk. She thanked Dave not only for coming at such short notice but for all the work he does with Megan and Mountain Rescue.

The competition was a beauty tip and was won by Janet Gadsby. Betty Castledine won the door raffle.
The next meeting will be on November 21st and will be the AGM and Harvest Supper. There will also be a Harvest Auction. The competition is “Your Favourite Recipe”.

Meeting held on 19th September 2007

The President, Mrs Janet Gadsby, welcomed everyone to the September meeting.

This month’s meeting started with our speaker, Mr Giblin, who talked about Langley Pottery. The potteries at Langley Mill were sited on the retail area where Netto now stands. It was near to the railway and canal for transporting finished goods. The pottery opened in 1865 and closed in 1982. Mr Giblin showed slides of pots and tableware that had been made at Langley over the years. Some of these are very rare and are now highly sought after by collectors. Mr Giblin and his wife brought a few items along to show what they have collected over the past few years. It was a very interesting talk and most members had at least one item from Langley pottery at home. Janet Padgham thanked Mr Giblin for coming and assured him that we would now all be on the look out for Langley Pottery.

The competition was a piece of named pottery and Betty Castledine won this. After tea had been served we returned to the business part of the meeting. Some members are due to be at Denby Cricket ground very early on Sunday 23rd Sept. where they hope to sell donated items at the car boot sale. A stall has been booked on Heanor market for our annual tombola on 26th October. The theme this year is black, white and grey. Ann Willis has once again been working very hard on next year’s programme, and has arranged a wide variety of speakers and entertainment for 2008.

Six members will be attending the Autumn Council meeting at the Assembly Rooms in Derby. Janet Padgham will report back at the October meeting. Margaret Allen won the raffle.

As a footnote, astute readers may have noticed the omission of a report on the July meeting. Sorry. Your correspondent was rather tied up at the time. But mention must be given to our Speaker who so helpfully stepped in at the last minute. Mr. Brian key from Heanor Historical Society gave a slide show and talk on the history of the area from Codnor market down to Loscoe where Loggins now stands. What a lot has changed over the last 100 years, although much still remains and some members spotted their own houses on the old photos. Thanks again Mr Brian Key.

The next meeting will be on October 17th when we have a speaker from Lush Shops: there will be an opportunity to purchase gifts for Christmas. This meeting will be an open meeting and anyone is welcome to attend. New members and visitors are always welcome – for more details call 01773 769884. Meeting held on 20th June 2007

This month’s meeting was a little different from usual. Loscoe WI had invited The String House Orchestra to come and entertain them.
The meeting was open to friends and family and we also welcomed parents and friends of the orchestra.

Mrs Janet Gadsby opened the meeting and welcomed everyone. Business was kept to a minimum with arrangements for forthcoming trips being discussed. The “Ding-bats” quiz winner was announced. Debbie Norman won the 1st prize with 2nd and 3rd going to Eileen Harris and Kath Binns respectively. Janet Gadsby then introduced the String House Orchestra.

Robin Padgham, the conductor, got the music underway and a selection of pieces was played. These included a medley from Phantom of the Opera, Handel's Fireworks Suite, the theme from Jurassic Park, America from West Side Story and finally Sailor’s Hornpipe, which went down so well that the orchestra were encouraged to play it again as an encore. Janet thanked the players and at the end Robin presented bouquets of flowers to Lucy Burton and Rhona Gedge, both of whom are leaving the orchestra and moving on to higher education.

The evening finished with refreshments of wine and nibbles and tea and biscuits. John Gent won the raffle.

The next meeting will be on 18th July. The speaker was to have been Gail from Beeches Florist. Unfortunately due to other commitments, Gail will be unable to attend but in her place we hope to have another florist. The competition will be “A home-made pomander”.

Meeting held on 16th May 2007

The President, Mrs Janet Gadsby, welcomed everyone to the May meeting.
An outing to Tissington has been arranged for 24th July.
We will have time to visit the Hall and look around the village before finishing with tea at The Coach House.
A trip is also being planned for early September. This will be a River Cruise including Sunday lunch.
The car boot / tabletop sale at Charles Hill, Loscoe will now be in early September. Keep watching for further details.
Janet Padgham gave a short talk about the resolution to be voted on at the AGM, which is
“This resolution urges H.M Government to stop the closure of Community Hospitals,
which provide essential services to local People”.

Janet will be attending the AGM at the Royal Albert Hall in London on 6th June
and will be representing four local WI groups. She said how much she was looking forward to going and would report back at the July meeting.
A discussion on the resolution followed with all members agreeing to the resolution as it stands but allowing Janet some leeway if any amendments are carried.
An auction of goods donated by members raised over £28 for funds and also raised plenty of laughs,
as bidding on jars of home-made marmalade became frantic.
A few sessions of Bingo then finished what had been a great social evening.
Mrs Joan Cook won the Competition for “A Fancy Thimble” and Mrs Norma Turner won the raffle.
The next meeting will be on June 20th. The entertainment will be provided by “The String House”,
a small local orchestra who will be playing a selection of tunes.
This meeting will be an open meeting and friends and family are invited.
The competition will be “A Piece of Sheet Music”.

Meeting held on 18th April 2007

The President, Mrs Janet Gadsby, welcomed everyone to the April meeting.
We have received the resolution for the AGM in London.
This year there is only one resolution about the closure of Community Hospitals.
A matter that is very close to everyone’s hearts, with discussions over the future of Heanor Memorial Hospital.
Members have agreed that we still want to do some fund raising in the summer, and this will hopefully
take the form of a Table-top / car boot sale at Charles Hill playing fields in Loscoe.
Watch this space for further details.
Our speaker for the evening, Mr. Maurice Styles was introduced, and kept us entertained with his talk entitled
“Pandora’s Box”. The Box contained about 30 items dating as far back as the 18th century.
The objects were passed round the tables and everyone was invited to guess what they were or what they had been used for.
This caused a great deal of laughter, as wild guesses were thrown about.
A few of the items we had to guess were a butter patter, a boatswain’s call, a spurtle for stirring porridge and a very old pea shooter.
When the true purpose of the items was revealed, in some cases there were great exclamations of “Oh yes I remember those”
or, “I never would have thought of that”.
Mr Styles has been collecting these bits and pieces for a while and now has over 90 different articles.
It was such a fun evening, handling the objects rather than just being told about them.
We hope to invite Mr Styles back to a future meeting with a different assortment of articles to test our memories.
Mr Styles was thanked for coming and all the objects were placed back in “Pandora’s Box”.
Mrs Mary Hicking won the Competition for your “Oldest Treasure” with a Photograph of her parents
and Mrs Eileen Harris won the raffle.
The next meeting will be on May 16th.
This will be a Social Evening with an Auction and the Resolution for the AGM will be discussed.
The competition is a “Fancy Thimble”
New members and visitors are always welcome – for more details call 01773 769884.
