Our speaker for the evening was Pat Hall, Derbyshire's very own Pam Ayres. Pat writes poems
that reflect a witty out-look on life as she sees it.
Pat lives in Stanton near Ashbourne, but puts her love of poetry down to her Welsh mother.
Pat's first taste of public speaking came at the age of five when she read out a poem at Sunday School.
Pat read out several of her own poems which had everyone laughing.
These poems were interspersed with short stories and anecdotes she has picked up over the years.
Pat was a brilliant speaker and kept us all entertained.
Thanks were expressed to Pat and she was invited to stay and share our Christmas buffet.

A new committee was then voted in.

While the business part of the meeting was happening our attention had been wandering slightly
as our speaker for the evening had been setting up along one side of the hall.
Out of boxes came chocolates in all shapes and sizes,
a large bain-marie and all sorts of interesting looking tools.
Janet then introduced Mr David Stone from Personally Yours Chocolates.
David had come along to tell us a little about his chocolate business and to demonstrate the art of making chocolates.
He soon had everyone's undivided attention as he stirred and lifted the melting chocolate in the bain-marie.
David had started in the chocolate business about 11 years ago
having first been in the knitwear business and then in the mining industry.Quite a change.
David demonstrated the art of “tempering” or cooling the melted chocolate on a marble slab,
and showed us how filled chocolates were made.
His talk was dotted with anecdotes and jokes that had us all laughing.
Norma concentrates on fudge dipping
At the end of his talk David invited volunteers to have a go at dipping some fudge. Pauline has a go Jean places the chocolate down carefully

Sometimes you just have to get on and do these things, but nobody complained.

Meeting held on 17th September 2008

Mrs Janet Gadsby welcomed members to the September meeting.
Our speaker for the evening, Mr Andrew Goodall, was introduced. Andrew had visited Loscoe WI some time ago and this return visit was to update us on how the Kenya project was progressing.
The Project is called The “Maisha Bora” Foundation, which translates as “A Better Life”. The villagers in Ikutha in Kenya are encouraged to help themselves to improve their quality of life.
They work together as a community with the resources given by the Foundation.
The foundation has provided the materials and tools for the villagers to build a Church, which can also be used as a community centre. They are helping to equip schools and have given material for the women to make into school uniforms for the children. These are often the only clothes the children have.
The children attend school but often it is just a gathering of children under a large tree. They have very little in the way of resources and use every scrap of paper they have including the sacks from the grains. At lunch time the children are given a stew of maize and corn but to be able to have lunch each child must bring a container of water to school in the morning. This goes into a big pot, for the stew to be cooked in.
Andrew told us that the foundation has been offered a 20 foot container to fill. It will be shipped out to Kenya and the contents delivered to the village of Ikutha. All the foundation has to do is fill it.
They are appealing for any donations of books including, encyclopaedias and dictionaries, paper, pens and pencils, gardening and building tools, hand worked sewing machines, bedding, sheets blankets.
They would also like children's clothes and shoes including any football kit (not boots) that could be donated. Anyone wishing to donate can contact Janet on 01773 746042.
Janet Padgham thanked Andrew for coming and for such an interesting talk and slide show.
Mrs Janet Gadsby then congratulated Joan Cook on receiving her medal, from the Prime Minister, for services to the Land Army.
Members sang “Happy Birthday” to Mary Hicking who was celebrating her birthday that day.
Items from the Derbyshire Link were discussed, including an event about wartime memories at Derbyshire House called “Keep smiling Through”.
Derbyshire Day at Denman college will take place in September 2009.

Winners of the annual quiz were drawn. There had been 10 correct entries. Katherine Tinsley won the first prize of £10, kindly donated by Ralph Walters. second and third went to Marion Grainger and Mary Hicking respectively.
Gillian Prince
Janet then introduced Mrs Gillian Prince. Gillian had an amazing collection of teapots.
This hobby started many years ago when Gillian got her first teapot for her “bottom drawer”.
She has 181 teapots now and can recount where each one came from or who gave it to her.
The teapots come in all sizes and patterns, including one made from a coconut shell that came from Singapore, an elephant shaped pot and one with two spouts, ideal for serving teas at WI events.
Gillian was able to trace her past through memories of the teapots and made us laugh, as she recounted the stories behind some of them.

We all travelled to the Eclipse, including our speakers who were happy to follow on in their car. On arrival the members seated themselves and after a slight bit of organising, the meeting got under way.
Janet Gadsby welcomed members and guests to our rather unconventional February meeting.

Peter entertains with a song Our speakers for the evening were Mrs Margaret Hargreaves and her husband Peter. Margaret spoke of her life in Duffield as a child during the Second World War.
She brought back memories of school days, gas masks and air raid shelters for those who had lived through the war and Peter sang songs from the war years. Peter did a wonderful monologue about the memories of an old soldier, and accompanied his singing on the keyboard.
We all joined in with: White Cliffs of Dover, Kiss me Goodnight Sergeant Major, Run Rabbit Run and Try a Little Tenderness, to name a few.
