Meeting held on 16th December 2009

The December meeting was opened by our new president Janet Padgham who welcomed all members and their guests.
Janet informed members of the new format of our meetings commencing in the New Year,
and the change of venue for the January meeting due to the renovation of the Egreaves Centre.
Loscoe W..I. had an article in the Derbyshire Link – a report on our murder mystery evening.
Janet reminded everyone about voting slips in the W.I. Life magazine and encouraged everyone to bring theirs along to the next meeting if they wished.
We are collecting old and broken jewellery for the Heart Research Fund and members were asked to bring any items along to contribute if they wished.
Thanks were given to June Camm who arranged a trip to Peak Cavern on Saturday 12th December.
A number of members and guests made the journey to Castleton to attend a carol concert entitiled ‘The Devils Arse Sings’
so called as the peak cavern is widely known as the devils arse. This was because it was home to the Troglodytes until 1915.
It was also a refuge for bandits as this natural phenomenon was the perfect hiding place with many caverns and passages.
The entrance to the cavern was dressed for Christmas with lights, foliage and baubles
with seating in and around the cavern while the centre reserved for the Castleton Silver Band.
A great atmosphere on arrival we were served with mulled wine and mince pies which helped to warm us up in this extremely cold venue.
It was a very enjoyable concert with the silver band leading all the carols and Christmas songs
with instrumentals from the band and a very entertaining master of ceremonies.
Not to be missed in future years!
June also reminded members of the pantomime trip on 30th January.
The evening continued in the form of a Christmas party where an excellent buffet was served. Cheers. All smiles. Ann, Jean and Margaret. Brenda and Joan.
We're having a good time. We're having a party. Best of friends. Ann and friend.
The table in the background looks noisy. Three little maids from school. Norma helps with the clearing up.
Anyone for wine? Eve's cracker hat matches her top.

The entertainment was provided by our own drama group with a play entitled ‘Down on the Farm’ which caused hilarity.
Jenni Pegley won the Christmas stocking competition and our Christmas raffle was a huge success with many prizes won.
Audrey Woollands won the main prize of the Christmas Hamper.
Our next meeting is held on 20th January at Loscoe Baptist Schoolroom on Furnace Lane
where the speaker will be Brian Naylor who will be enlightening us about the Heage Windmill.
Please note - This meetingn has been cancelled due to the severe weather
We are always looking to strengthen our numbers and always welcome new members to share in our many activities for the forthcoming year.

She explained about the costumes that were worn and how authentically they were made.
Janet had her own battlefield kit plus some day wear and a banqueting dress.
She also showed how the men dress for battle with shirt, breeches, hose, boots, soldiers coat, buff coat, armour, helmet and gauntlets.

Janet then welcomed Mrs Ann Bailey our speaker for the evening.
Ann's talk entitled Grandma's Old Tin Trunk held us captivated
as Ann unlocked the secrets of her Grandma's life in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Ann's Grandma was born in 1880, married in 1911, and Ann lived with her grandparents in a large house in Ilkeston.
Grandma loved pretty things and was always ready to let Ann handle her possessions. Some of the articles from the trunk. Grandma's wedding photo. The Old Tin Trunk has been beautifully decorated.

Mary has a look at Grandma's wedding photo.
Ann has kept some lovely items, from beautifully embroidered lace to picture books and hair brushes.
When Ann went through her Gandma's things most of the precious items had been wrapped in blue tissue paper
to keep them safe.
She showed us some knitting patterns and paper patterns, bloomers and a lovely baby gown.
It was a wonderful talk and gave quite an insight into how much work went into the simplest of items,
from a milk jug cover to a lace doily for the dressing table.
Ann invited us to come and touch and handle the articles just as she had always been allowed to do.
Janet Padgham thanked Ann for an amusing and enlightening talk.

There was plenty of time to have a look at the things from the trunk while members had tea and biscuits.
Ann stayed until the end of the meeting so we could ask questions and enjoy handling the articles.
Lyn enjoyed the social part of the meeting. Kath and Betty study some patchwork.

She had a wonderful time in London. The Resolution about Honey Bees was passed with a majority of 99.4%. Roger Hoskin

Janet then welcomed Mr Roger Hoskin from Highfields Happy Hens in Etwall.
Roger told of his early life and his disruptive childhood
and how he came to be involved in rearing hens and helping young offenders.
The farm has 24,000 free range hens which produce over 20,000 eggs a day.
The young people who help on the farm get involved in all aspects of the work,
from collecting and counting eggs, to serving in the tea rooms.
They often arrive feeling aggressive and unhappy but after a few sessions angry hands become gentle hands
as the young people learn to count, read, write, handle money and customers.

The project has a reputation for keeping young people out of trouble and getting them back into school.
Over the last 24 years Roger and his wife Beryl have turned the lives of hundreds of children around
with their devotion and Christian beliefs.
Visit Highfields website at Highfield Happy Hens or better still pay a visit
and support the work by buying your free range eggs from the farm.
Norma Turner gave the vote of thanks and echoed everyone's views that Roger had given a very interesting talk
and left us with plenty to think about. Norma sells some home made preserve

Tea was served and members were able to buy home-made goods from the sales table.
There were jars of home-made jam and preserves, greetings cards, knitted hats and booties,
cakes and bakewell tarts, and lots of plants.
As usual Norma put her selling tequinques to good use
and the sale raised over £40. This money
will be forwarded to Roger to help with the Happy Hens project.

thanking us for our continued donations of toiletries to the unit, they are always very gratefully received.

Items from the Derbyshire Link were discussed including the Bakewell Show on 5th/6th August
and photos for the 2011 Derbyshire calendar on a theme of “Derbyshire Days”.
The West Leys group has a Treasure Hunt on 8th June and a Songs of Praise service at Marlpool Church on 27th June.
Janet then read out the resolution to be discussed at the AGM in London on 3rd June.
It concerns the plight of the Honey Bee.
The resolution is urging HM Government to “Increase funding for research into bee health”.
Mr George Drury
Mr George Drury, a bee keeper from Ripley,
was then invited to give a talk about the life of the honey bee and how important it is that we work to protect them.
He had bought along a section of bee hive and other items to do with bee keeping.
Mr Drury gave us an amazing insight into the workings of a bee hive and the way the bees all have their set jobs to do.
Mr George Drury Honey-comb & bee collecting basket

He explained that the bee population was declining rapidly, mainly due to the Varroa Parasite.
This parasite lives on the bees and kills their immune system.
We can all play our part in protecting the honey bee
by reducing the levels of pesticides we use in our gardens
and keeping a lookout for swarms that may be searching for a new home.
If you see a swarm (they are often found hanging from a branch or shed)
contact Mr George Drury on 07940 235097 and he will come and collect the bees and give them a safe home.
Please do not disturb them as this could put you at risk of being stung.
Mr Drury explained how he would collect a swarm of bees once they have settled.
He had a basket with him that he places under the swarm, then he knocks the swarm into the basket,
hopefully the queen in among them and he can then relocate them to one of his hives.
He used to have 14 hives, then slowly the number dropped, last year he had seven,
this year he only has four.
Four years ago his bees produced about 600lbs of honey,
there were large fields of oil seed rape nearby and this was the main source of nectar
for the bees. Last year saw production down to 52lb, this year there will be far less.
Be keeping items
Members take a look

Ann Willis gave the vote of thanks for an extremely enlightening talk.
We will all be taking a much closer interest in the bees in and around our gardens.
All members were in agreement with the resolution and Janet Gadsby will vote in favour
when she attends the AGM at the Royal Albert Hall on Wednesday 3rd June.
Tea and biscuits were then served.
Janet Gadsby won the competition for a pretty glass and Jackie Hallford won the door raffle.
The next meeting at The Evergreen Centre on Egreaves Avenue, Loscoe will be on Wednesday 17th June at 7pm.
The speaker for the evening will be from Highfield Happy Hens, and the competition is a Decorated Egg.
We will also have a sales table with all items being home-made.
This is an open meeting so please bring your friends.
New members and visitors are always welcome – for more details call 01773 769884

Meeting held on 15th April 2009

Mrs Janet Gadsby welcomed members to the April meeting.
Items from the Derbyshire Link were discussed and Janet read out a message
from the new Derbyshire Federation Chairman, Nancy Hawksworth.
Another item was entitled 'Have you 'Moodled' yet'. Details are on the National WI website.
Intrigued? Take a look.
Our trip to the Ridgeway Craft Centre and Renishaw Hall on 21st May has been finalised.
We will meet at Loscoe Post Office at 10:30. Many thanks to Audrey for organising this outing.
Plans are also being sorted for the Mystery Tour in July and the outing to York in September,
places are still available. Maurice Styles

Once the business had been completed, Janet welcomed Maurice Styles back to Loscoe.
He had come with his 3rd Pandora's Box, a collection of items,
gadgets and artefacts, mostly from a bygone era.
Members were invited to guess the uses that the objects were put to. What could this be?

Who knows what that is for?
We had a sheet with cryptic clues to help with identification.
A few items were immediately recognisable but others left us baffled.
We had a lot of fun and laughs trying to find a use for a large wooden mushroom,
which turned out to be a kitchen item for pressing the water out of cabbage.
Among the other items was a hat stretcher,
a protective plate for use when cleaning uniform buttons
and a gadget for putting corks in to wine bottles. What do you do with this? I think that goes in there.
Write it down before we forget. Maurice explains the uses.

Janet Padgham thanked Maurice for a most entertaining evening
and asked about a fourth box.
Maurice said he was about halfway there with it and that
he enjoys looking out for unusual items to go into his boxes.
We very much look forward to welcoming Maurice back some time in the future.

Refreshments were served and thanks were expressed to Betty Castledine
for bringing in a lovely tin of biscuits to share on the occasion of her 80th birthday.
We all sang Happy Birthday to Betty.
After tea and biscuits the winner of the competition was announced.
Betty Wardle had won the prize for your “oldest coin” with a King George III penny,
although it was worn quite smooth in places so the date was not readable
it was still possible to read the name of Georgius III and see the King's head.
Mary Hicking won the door raffle.
The next meeting at The Evergreen Centre on Egreaves Avenue, Loscoe
will be on Wednesday 20th May at 7pm.
This will be the resolution meeting.
There is only one resolution going forward to the AGM in London in June,
and this concerns the demise of the honey bee.
The resolution is as follows:

'SOS for Honey Bees -
Honey Bees play a vital role in the pollination of food crops and in our environment.
In view of concerns about the accelerating decline in the UK honey bee population,
this meeting urges HM Government to increase funding for research into Bee Health.'

We hope to have a bee keeper at this meeting to tell us more about the problems the honey bees face.
There will also be a trading stall and a chance to socialise at the meeting.
The competition is a pretty glass.
New members and visitors are always welcome – for more details call 01773 769884

from The Kenya Project.
Andrew thanked everyone for the donation, and explained that the money
could go towards paying local people to unload the trailer of goods that have been donated.
He said wages were very low in Kenya and this money would go a long way,
but it would all be used to help the villagers.

Margaret in character
Janet then welcomed Margaret and Peter Hargreaves, who had returned with songs, stories and monologues.
Margaret started by reciting a poem about smiling and it being infectious:
we should all smile more and infect the world.
Peter played tunes on his keyboard and we all joined in with Daisy, Daisy,
If you were the only girl in the world,
and I'm Henery the Eighth I am. Margaret recited a poem about marriage which had us all laughing.
Although Margaret and Peter took the floor for a full hour the time passed so quickly with everyone enjoying themselves.

Meeting held on 21st January 2009

The January meeting was opened by our president, Mrs Janet Gadsby, who welcomed everyone and wished all a happy new year.
A special welcome was extended to all the visitors who had come along for the first time.
Janet informed members of the death of Mrs Dorothy Walker, who passed away on boxing day. Five members had represented Loscoe WI at her funeral.
Janet then welcomed Conor Bostock to our meeting. Conor, who is fourteen, gave a talk about his forthcoming school trip to Morocco in July.
He is going with a group of eighteen students from Heanor Gate Science College.
They will be part of the World Challenge Organisation. The trip involves a flight to Marrakesh where the students spend their first night.
They then have to trek through the Atlas Mountains and could spend a night sleeping under the stars in the Sahara Desert.
In preparation for the trip students have to plan their route for when they arrive in Morocco.
They also have to budget for their meals and buy and cook the food while away.
Conor explained that one of the aims of the expedition is to encourage team work and decision making.
To gain a place on this expedition Conor had to apply in writing explaining why he wanted to go.
He also had to agree to raise a minimum of £1,500 through fund-raising.
To date, Conor, with the help and support of his family, has raised £1000.
He has achieved this through sponsorship from local businesses and by doing car boot sales,
a tombola, fashion show and other money raising events.
Conor finished his talk with a question and answer session and agreed to return after his trip to tell us how it went.
Chris Miller gave the vote of thanks and everyone agreed his talk had been very interesting.
Well done Conor.
Janet then went through the business.
Loscoe WI celebrates its 30th birthday this year so we hope to make it a very special year,
with lots of outings and activities.
Items from the Derbyshire Link were mentioned including a St. Patrick's Day event on 17th March at Darley Dale
and the county show on 28th June when the theme will be Nursery Rhymes.
National Family Week takes place between 25th and 31st May and Janet asked members
to think about activities we could plan which would be family orientated.
Charity money raised at Christmas was added to previously raised money and Andrew Goodall
from the Kenya Project will be presented with a cheque at our February meeting.
Tickets for Calendar Girls were given out and those going will make their own way to the Theatre Royal
and meet up once inside.
The next meeting of the drama group will be on Monday 9th February at 2.30 at the Evergreen Centre.
Lunch at the Mallard in Ilkeston has been booked for 27th February.
June Camm is arranging a walk for February which will be a local one around Smalley.
As the spring and summer approach, June will once again be planning walks for further afield.
After the business, tea and biscuits were served and there was plenty of time to chat and catch up with friends.
Our visitors had a chance to get to know members and we hope to see them all next month.
Maureen Messam won the competition for a good luck token and Mrs Jackie Hallford won the door raffle.
The next meeting at The Evergreen Centre on Egreaves Avenue, Loscoe will be on Wednesday 18th February at 7pm.
We will be welcoming back Margaret Hargreaves, this time with songs and stories from the Music Hall days.
The competition is a favourite poem.
New members and visitors are always welcome – for more details call 01773 769884
