The Jam and Jerusalem Walkers have had several walks since they began

Back in the winter of 2008, June Camm suggested we start a walking group.
June plans the walks and sorts out bus times for getting to the start.
Some walks are around the local area, but as the weather in the
summer improves the walks start futher afield.
Anyone is welcome to join us.
A comfy pair of shoes or boots and a waterproof coat are advisable.
Here is a photographic record of the walks members have done.
Codnor Castle 18th May 2010
We met at Loscoe Post Office on a warm sunny morning and walked down Furnace Lane towards Loscoe Dam.
Loscoe Dam. Geese and ducks. The view across the Dam.
A brief stop at the Dam to watch the geese then it was off over the stile and up the hill giving us views right across Loscoe and Heanor.
Looking towards Heanor. Back towards Loscoe Dam. Up the hill. A quick stop.
The Thorn Tree is being revamped by Georges Tradition Fish and Chip Restaurants and will open late summer.

The ruins of Codnor Castle.
We crossed a field and came to the ruins of Codnor Castle,
Janet and Norma recalled the time when you could walk right up to the walls and get a close look.
That all changed after Time Team had featured the castle on one of their programmes.
Eve, June and Janet with Norma sitting. Muck spreading. Molly enjoyed the rest. June under starters orders.
We hoped the farmer wouldn't start muck spreading until he got further away.
Luckily for us he was muck spreading on the other side of the field,
but we did need to get quite close to the spread muck to find the stile.
Part of the hedgerow. Ready to let the seeds fly.
The track towards Codnor. Very dry ground. Molly can't find any mud.
Janet and Norma had never seen this area so dry, it is usually a case of wading through the mud.
Everything is very green. Almost back at Codnor.
Our walk ended with views across Golden Valley, as we came up a track and out onto Nottingham Road in Codnor.
June and Eve caught the bus back to Heanor and Janet, Norma and myself walked down to Loscoe.

Shipley Country Park Tuesday 23rd March 2010
When you have a wonderful country park on your doorstep why not visit regularly. Loscoe WI members often take a walk around the park and woods.
The ever changing flora and fauna make it well worth lots of visits.
June, Janet and Molly, Norma and Eve.
Five of us met in Heanor and headed down Wilmot Street towards Shipley Park. We went to Osborne Ponds and stopped to look at the swans and other birds on the water.
Swans. Swans. Swans.
We saw a chaffinch hopping about in the bushes near the cafe.
Chaffinch. Chaffinch.
Signs of spring as the snowrops are just finishing and the crocus are coming out.
snowdrops. snowdrops. Swans.
Octagonal Tower. Towards Shipley Wood.
Such a shame that the West Leys Women's Institute Bench has been vandalised. Time to get a group together to see about renovating it.
WI bench. WI bench. WI bench.
daffodils just coming up. daffodils.

Janet's dog, Molly, certainly enjoyed the walk, she was extremely well behaved and waited for us to catch up.
Molly. Molly.
June points out a bird high in a tree futher along the path. Out come the binoculars. Not sure what it is.
What's that in the tree? June has excellent eyesight. A bird of prey? Sculpture.

We walked back to town passed the cemetary and and a lovely display of crocus in the church grounds.

Shipley Country Park Tuesday 17th March 2009
Through Shipley Wood. Janet waits for Janet!.
Five of us met up in Heanor on a cloudy morning.
We caught the bus to Ilkeston Hospital where we started our walk.
Turning off Heanor Road we walked up through Shipley Woods.
In the woods . June looks at a hollow tree. Shall we move on.

Then down past the site of the now closed down American Adventure.
Such a shame that a large part of land is completely closed off to the public.
Can you see the daffodils?
We carried on up towards Derby Lodge, the snowdrops had finished flowering but there
were a few clumps of daffodils, a sure sign that spring is well on it's way.
We saw one pretty blue flower (see photo) don't know it's name.
Can anyone name this flower, send your answer using the contact us button on the home page. A blue flower. The round building.
Long tailed tits. At the bird hide. At the bird hide.
After a brief stop we walked down the hill and turned onto Bell Lane.
Turning left we headed towards Cinder Hill and the Visitors Centre.
We took a small detour and went to look at the new bird hide.
We saw long tailed tits, blue titis and sparrows feeding at the feeders.
Janet, June, Joan and Janet. Eve, Janet, Janet and June.
Then it was on towards the cafe for a refreshments stop.
Soup and warm roll with a cup of tea or coffee, just the job.
A browse around the visitor centre shop and then on towards the Country Park Tavern.
Cutting up through the cemetary we arrived back at Heanor Market Place.
Although the sun didn't shine we still had a very enjoyable walk.
Thankyou June for being our guide.

Upper Hartshay Tuesday 21st October 2008
October 2008. October 2008.
The october walk was a circular one, starting at the Market Place in Ripley.
The route went to Upper Hartshay, Lower Hartshay and on to the Gate Inn.
Then on to Old Hartshay Hill and back to Ripley Market.

Monsal Trail Tuesday 22nd July 2008 Janet, Norma and Joan.

This walk started at Bakewell Station.
We walked along the Monsal Trail.
Somehow we missed the turn off back to Bakewell, I think
the right of way has been fenced off. (We will try again)
We carried on our walk to Rowsley, visiting Caudwell Mill on route.
We all still enjoyed our walk and it was a lovely sunny day.

Black Rocks, Cromford. Tuesday 24th June 2008. Janet, Chris, Eve and Norma

A perfect day for a walk, warm and sunny.
Taking the H1 to Derby and then the 6.1 to Bakewell
the bus driver put us off at Steeple Grange.
Here we picked up the Tissington Trail.
Janet, June, Eve and Norma.

We took a steady walk, taking in the views.
How lucky we are to live in such a variable country. A short rest.

After reaching the canal we stopped to eat our sandwiches.
We then carried on to Cromford Mill.
It had been another lovely day out for the J.J. Walkers.

Langley Canal Tuesday 22nd May 2008

Unfortunately there are no photos from this walk.
Setting off from the Canal Basin, we walked along the tow path
nearly to Cotmanhay.
Turning back towards Shipley Boat and going over the fields.
Then through the woods. This was the old railway track to the canal
from the local coal mines taking coal to the barges.
We then went on to Shipley Garden Centre for a cup of tea.
This was a sunny day and a lovely walk.

Shipley Park Tuesday 22nd April 2008
Walking in Shipley Park
Our first walk, was a short ramble around Shipley Park.
It was raining as the group set off.
Starting at Osbourn's Ponds we walked over the fields to Bell Lane.
Then up to Derby Lodge and on up the lane to the Water Tower.
Photo on the left shows June, Joan, Janet and Maureen. The sun finally came out.

Later the sun came out.
We cut across the grass to have a look at the WI bench.
This bench was put in place to celebrate the new millennium.
We did notice that the seat was in need of some attention.
This photo shows Ann, Maureen, Janet, Joan and June.
